Goose Hunting Dates: December to Mid. February
The Canada geese begin to show up in large numbers around mid-December. This, of course, could be earlier if weather north of here dictates. I have access to over fifteen different private fields, mostly corn and winter wheat. There are times that the river itself and the ponds and marshes just off the river can be fantastic producers, as well. I use large spreads of realistic Big Foot decoys. Depending on the situation, and number of geese in the area, I sometimes put out as many as twenty dozen or more decoys. Often, however, ten dozen may be more than enough to lure the geese.
I use any modern technology that I feel works: robotic heads that move; battery-powered foot swivels that make the decoys look as if they are walking; and decoys with flapping wings. I hunt out of heated pit blinds for the comfort and concealment needed to hunt late season Canada's, and if we need to be mobile, I will use Final Approach blinds. All of this plus my skill in operating a short reed goose call will give the hunter every opportunity to bag his or her limit of five Canada geese.
